Today I have the privilege of introducing you to one of my favorite bloggy moms that just so happens to be our curator/designer for this month’s Fresh Box. Meet Kim Davis of the ever-adorable blog, Oh, Sweet Joy!. She is a loving wife, mama and shop owner/seamstress that has inspired me for years. And she’s also one of the few bloggers that I’ve actually had the joy of meeting face to face. Kim is the real deal y’all. She is silly, open and honest about life’s ups and downs. All of these beautiful qualities made her a no-brainer choice for our July Fresh Box. We hope you are encouraged by this Mom Interview.

Chase and I are Texas natives, living in Boulder, Colorado. Chase is the Executive Pastor at The Well and I get the privilege of running Oh, Sweet Joy! and staying home with the kiddos. We have two boys that we adore – Knox (2) and Owen (born June 1st).  I live for Saturdays, which are Chase’s only true “day off.” I find so much joy in being spontaneous with my boys – whether that’s going for a quick hike or just running errands  and working around the house. As long as we’re together as a party of four, I’m happy, and it totally resets me for the upcoming week.  I love designing and running the social media/marketing aspects of my business, but my biggest joy is being a wife & mom. It’s truly the most rewarding role.

Q: Can you give us a glimpse into a typical day with your littles?

A: Well, every day is different and a lot slower now that there’s a newborn in the house, but one thing is for sure that there’s lots of bedhead to go around, staying in our PJ’s until noon and playing with trucks. If it’s not too hot (that Colorado sun is brutal), we try to head over to the park at some point and I’m not going to lie, we spend a good hour with Daniel Tiger every morning while I (try to) catch up on e-mails. Right now, everything is unpredictable…which can be exciting and spontaneous but also can make the days seem crazy and go by super fast.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a mama?

A: That’s a three way tie between snuggles on the sofa, tickle fights  and just simply watching my boys learn. Seeing the world through their excited eyes is such a gift.

Q: What was your biggest fear before becoming a mama?

Q: You just had your second son; how has that changed the family dynamic and what does Knox think of his little brother?

A: Knox goes back and forth between completely ignoring and not acknowledging the new kid on the block and being so sweet and giving voluntary kisses. He rarely calls him by name (Owen) and just calls him “Babyyyy.” Mostly, he’s become more mischievous and we’ve had some disastrous messes made while I’m “stuck” nursing Owen. As for our family dynamic, I feel like Chase and I have been able to operate best in man-defense mode. He takes the late night shift from 9-1 so I can get some sleep  (hallelujah) and we are taking each day at a time, because Lord knows each day presents it’s own set of unpredictable struggles and adventures!

Q: What is the biggest challenge you faced so far caring for a big boy and a new baby?

A:  The mischief of a two year old! Knox can be so sweet, but he is such a rascal. Also, trying to find time to work and make sure that it can be a priority that day is tough. Most days, the boys “win” that time, which I’m definitely not mad about, but at some point I’m going to have to jump back in!

Q: For mamas about to embark on the journey of going from one to two, what advice would you give them?

A:  Grace upon grace. For yourself, for your kids, for your husband, for your family and friends. It can be overwhelming but it doesn’t have to “break you.” Also – ask for help.

Q: Let’s get really real… How are you handling the lack of sleep and not truly being able to nap when the baby naps, as we are all advised with our first born?

A:  Ugh. Struggling. I feel like once the sun comes up, I manage…it’s those late night nursing sessions that start to mess with me. Those nights that I’m dizzy from exhaustion can be lonely but as soon as we officially start our day when Knox wakes up, it brings new mercies and a big ol’ cup of coffee.

Q: You also run a popular blog and e-commerce business, Oh, Sweet Joy!; how do you juggle everything?

A:  I make naptime my work time and I usually package orders after Knox is down for the night. Other than that, I just go with the flow and do what I can, when I can.

Q: What do you think is the most common preconceived notion about being a stay-at-home mama and blogger?

A: That we just play on the internet all day and that we are happy working for “stuff.” I have to respond to at least 5 emails a week telling big companies and small businesses, alike, that I don’t work for free and free products don’t help put food on the table ((in more polite words, of course)). Everyone wants free marketing and my time is precious. I’d rather turn down exciting collaborations than waste time with my boys. They’re only little once!

Q: Do you have any go to sources for parenting?

A: I feel like my friends and family are my lifelines. I text them for advice every day, it seems. It truly takes a village. Also – the book Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist  really changed my perspective on celebrating the everyday. It doesn’t necessarily have to do with parenting, but trying to live in the moment and enjoy life, even in the midst of crazy toddler tantrums, meal strikes, and dirty diapers, is so important.

Q: How do you wind down at the end of your day?

A: I watch something on The Food Network on the sofa with my man and/or scroll through instagram. I wish I was a wine drinker, because it sounds a little bit classier, but a big bowl of ice cream (or a whole container of gelato) never fails to make a rough day better.

See what I mean? Real. Love her for it!  I hope you’ve enjoyed our interview today. As you can see, Kim’s got a little love fest with cactus kickin’ and so do we. It made for the perfect print on this month’s Fresh Box. She and I also share mad love for ice cream, hence her go-to vanilla ice cream recipe in this month’s box and an adorable bamboo spoon to share with your littles, should you be willing. {wink. wink.} Thanks for reading and thanks to Kim for sharing. We hope you are getting some much needed sleep and loads of cuddles with your sweet boys. Being a boy mom and TOTALLY out numbered has its perks – massive perks. xo
